RGS OFF SITE SAFETY MANAGEMENT
with Alan Ward IML
Alan Ward
Alan was born in York where his father was in the army and for most of his childhood, the family moved home from army base to army base and this included two stays in Hong Kong and one in Germany in addition to being in the UK. Alan’s travelling experiences began when he was under the age of two, on a troopship to Hong Kong. Finishing school in Brecon, Alan joined the BP Tanker Company as a young navigating officer and sailed on a variety of ocean going oil tankers for 5 years before moving into the oil industry.
Employed by Conoco Inc. (a US based major oil company), Alan lived in Dubai, Singapore and Indonesia with his wife and two daughters for ten years. With the children growing older, the family then moved back to Brecon where Alan worked for the Brecon Beacon Beacons National Park Authority for over 20 years. During this time, Alan achieved various outdoor qualifications including the International Mountain Leader Award and became a mountain training instructor. Other training courses he taught included: Rescue Emergency Care (REC) First Aid, IOSH Managing Safely, RGS Off Site Safety Management and a Hearstart First Aid instructor for the British Heart Foundation.
Bigfoot Services Limited was established on March 4th, 2003 and Alan left the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority in 2010 to concentrate on developing Bigfoot Services Limited as a worldwide provider of quality training and adventures. In 2006 and 2010, Alan was one of 10 finalists in the Wanderlust Travel Magazine’s annual Top Guide Awards.
Currently, Alan devotes his time equally to being an International Mountain Leader delivering worldwide training and adventures, whilst still undertaking regular visits to the offshore oil and gas sector in Indonesia as a Lead Auditor for ISO implementation with a major pipelaying operation in the Java Sea.

RGS OFF SITE SAFETY MANAGEMENT
The RGS certificated Off-Site Safety Management course (OSSM) course is offered on a regular basis by Menhinick Outdoors Limited and for private groups on request.
Overview
1.1 Introduction The Off-Site Safety Management course (OSSM) was designed in response to concerns about safety in off-site activities. It addresses the content of legislation in this area and provides an opportunity for attendees to explore the application of the legislation in practical situations. The OSSM course will be appropriate for those working in a range of different situations where they are responsible for taking children/young people/adults out of their everyday environments (e.g. on geography or environmental field trips, on sporting away events, on organised activities). It aims to equip attendees with the ability to apply knowledge, understanding and problem solving skills in a range of contexts.
1.2 Aims • To develop knowledge and understanding of off-site safety management procedures and the ability to apply this to a range of different contexts. • To develop the ability to plan, manage and evaluate off-site activities in order to ensure the safety of the participants. • To develop skills that are relevant to the workplace and which can be adapted to meet different circumstances • To encourage further study and promote the value of continuing professional development.
1.3 Target Group The scheme is designed for adults working with both young people and adults where they will be required to plan, manage and evaluate off-site safety policies, procedures and activities. It will be particularly appropriate for teachers, lecturers, trainers and youth workers who are seeking to develop their knowledge and skills in off-site safety management. It is also relevant to those who work in organisations seeking compliance with the new British Standard, BS 8848: the specification for the provision of visits, fieldwork, expeditions, and adventurous activities, outside the United Kingdom.
1.4 Prior Learning Although there are no formal entry requirements in terms of prior learning, attendees may find it helpful to draw on previous knowledge and experience of managing safety issues in the workplace. Basic understanding of planning processes and risk assessment and safety management may also provide useful starting points. Experience of leading visits, activities or expeditions will also be beneficial.
